Christmas is almost here and no doubt you’ll be having a drink or
two with friends and families over the festive period. But have
you ever stopped to ask yourself why we clink* glasses when we
say ‘cheers’ or make a toast*?

The custom of touching glasses originated in medieval times as a
precaution against being poisoned. Back then, when a toast was
made, a little wine was exchanged, poured from one goblet* to
another around the table. After this ritual, everybody would take
the first sip* of their drink at the same time. By mixing their drinks
in this way the host and guests could be sure that there was no
assassin among them.

*clink = chocar
*make a toast = hacer un brindis
*goblet = copa
*sip =sorbo
